Introducing: PA Femke Folkertsma
Student Experience offers its residents many facilities. Including an in-house general practitioner. General practice Zwaansvliet provides a practitioner at Ravel Residence every Tuesday from 13.30 to 15.00 o'clock. Meet Femke Folkertsma of general practice Zwaansvliet.
Since a few weeks, Femke has been the new face during the weekly practice on Tuesday. Femke was born and raised in Hoorn, but currently lives in Amsterdam. After 4 years working as a skin therapist, she decided it was time to take a new step in her career. She received her Master’s degree as an Physician Assistant (PA) 1.5 years ago. Femke tells: ‘’As a skin therapist I was mainly concerned with treatments and saw less direct results. I did not get the satisfaction I get today as a Physician Assistant.’’
What is a PA exactly?
A Physician Assistant takes over tasks from the general practitioner or specialist. For example, the physical examination, anamneses and diagnose and treatment of common (chronic) diseases. In addition, PA’s can also perform medical procedures or work as a ward pshysician. You can follow the Master's degree to become a PA if you are HBO certified and have at least 2 years of experience in health care. During your education you are also obligated to work at a general practice or specialist to gain a lot of experience.
‘’Just like a general practitioner in training, I can run the consultation hour and I can prescribe medication. However, there are 4 groups that I do not treat: Children under the age of 6 months, frail elderly, patients with acute psychiatry and people receiving palliative care. I work closely with the GP’s of general practice Zwaansvliet and in complex cases I will reach out for their help and opinion’’, Femke explains.
Femke: ‘’The thing I like most about being a PA is the contact you have with patients, having very dynamic work days and the visible result in the short term. I am also very happy working at general practice Zwaansvliet, so I definitely see myself working for the upcoming years ahead. For the future It would be nice if I will have a PA colleague that I can guide.’’
For Student Experience residents: ‘’The consultation hour at Ravel Residence is very accessible. Everyone is welcome. Even if your symptoms seem very small or you only have questions about topics such as birth control or drug use. Feel free to walk in!’’
