Zuidas selects Verweij Holding for the development of temporary student housing in the Ravel district
The Dienst Zuidas of Amsterdam intends to build temporary student housing on the lot at the De Boelelaan and Antonio Vivaldistraat intersection. After a pitch, Verweij Holding was selected as the firm to develop 820 student apartments, based on a design by OeverZaaijer. The complex will be built by modular builder Jan Snel.
Initiators Johan Verweij and Roy Mungra of Verweij Holding are new players in the student housing market. The complex in Ravel is an innovative and representative student apartment complex, which consists of self-contained student apartments with facilities including a supermarket, grand café, employment agency, bicycle shop and laundry room. All apartments, starting at 18.5 m², have a kitchen and a bathroom. Each floor also has a number of larger apartments. The complex consists of 5 floors with a rooftop basketball court and space for city farming.
Johan Verweij, director of Verweij Holding: “Ravel Residence is an attractive apartment complex with extensive facilities where privacy and security are guaranteed. We believe that this concept meets the needs of the students of this age. It’s going to be a real student community, where you can live, work and relax." Verweij has teamed up with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Urban Management department and the ASVA student union.
Modular builder Jan Snel is specialized in semi-permanent housing. The building is constructed according to a modular construction concept and features a high-quality foundation. Although these apartments are temporary, this system complies with permanent building regulations. Construction will start in autumn 2013 and students can expect to be able to move into the apartment complex in mid-2014. This student housing complex is intended to remain in use for a period of 12 years.
The city of Amsterdam is developing a mixed urban living and working environment in Zuidas. Plans for both temporary and permanent student housing fit within this scheme. Additionally, Zuidas is contributing to solving the demand for student housing in Amsterdam.
